A double-curved jewellery box veneered with richly figure pale myrtle and decorated with dyed veneers. It measures 13" x 9" x 5" and is french polished.
The lid is decorated with a multi-colured harlequin panel which contrasts strongly with the beautiful pale myrtle.
The exterior is decorated with a multi-coloured line made up from dyed veneers. There is a natural heirarchy on a box of this sort - the lid and front are decorated to a certain level as these are the most prominent, and the sides and back are less decorated. This can be seen here - the side can be seen to the left and this does not have the colours, just te black and white line, and the boxwood squares that protect all the exterior edges. It is challenging getting all these elements to meet just right at the corners - but it’s worth taking the time to get just right!
The two trays are made from fiddle back maple and lined with blue leather.
The trays fit in the box so that the top one sits proud and protrudes up into the curved lid making the most out of the available space. The lid is hinged with high quality polished brass quadrant hinges, stopping the lid securely just past 90 degrees.
The trays lift out to allow access to the main box underneath for keeping bulkier items safe, or for special pieces in their individual cases.
This clearly shows the leather covered steps inside the main box that support the two trays, supporting them securely whilst using up a minimum of space. The laminated veneer splines that strengthen the corners of the trays can also be seen - these are blue and yellow to match the coloured lines.
The lock is in polished brass and the escutcheon is made from dyed veneers to match the panel in the lid.
