This colourful box was made for a customer after he saw a small watercolour box with similar decoration. The exterior is veneered with Canadian figured maple, decorated with dyed veneers and french polished. This was a project in my second book, 'Fine Decorative Boxes' published by Sterling in 1998.
This clearly shows the design on the lid using wavy multi-coloured lines cut from a block of dyed veneers laminated in a curved former. This was made as a project for my second box making book, ‘Fine Decorative Wood Boxes’.
It doesn’t have a lock - but is fitted with an ebony handle to facilitate opening the lid
The interior is lined with figured maple and was originally designed to hold around 50 3 1/2" floppy computer disks. But the ebony-lipped dividers are removable so that now that floppies are all but extinct it can be used for something else. Presumably this is now in service storing something useful ...
