This is an unusual jewellery box using the natural edges of amboyna veneer to create a striking map effect.

After construction the whole box was double veneered - first with a blue dyed veneer and then with the amboyna. Nearly all burrs are trimmed before being cut into veneer - but amboyna is often not as it is such an expensive veneer. The leaves I used here had a wide area of sap around the edges that form the 'coastlines' giving this box its character. I have used almost none of the more characteristic purple coloured amboyna heartwood - you can see just a little of this at the bottom of the front right hand strap.
