I have always loved the painting 'Arlequin' by Picasso and my first harlequin box was loosely inspired by it. The box is veneered with ripple maple and the design is actually a blue lacquer but on all subsequent harlequin boxes I joined pieces of dyed veneer with thin black strips in between.

I never looked back and have done many boxes featuring this type of design - some are shown in the Colours & Harlequins section of the Galleries - most feature two colours only but some involve 6 or 8 colours.
